The Wonder Boys

David at Strawberry Fields, New York, April 6, 2011. No, we didn't see Yoko at the Dakota, unfortunately.

David at Quorthon's grave in Stiockholm, Nov 23, 2012, lighting 13 Candles.

Christian Kastén at a Free Fall gig at Debaser Slussen, Stockholm, March 15, 2013. Mayhem/Darkthrone, anyone?

David at the (vintage) mike (which didn’t work). Like we paraphrased Jonathan Richman’s “Roadrunner” in the middle-eight of our old “Go Down Below”: 1-2-3-4-5-666!

On March 3, 2005, it was time to try a new version of The Wonder Boys' 1998 evergreen "New Start" in Studio Gröt. Title (you guessed it): "New Start 2005". Since Gröt does not play any instrument on the track, he at least got to pose with this cool'n'cozy "axe" instead.

Christian G and David L in Studio Gröt, recording "Lament 2:2" on Nov 29, 2003.

David, at Fridhemsplan subway station, Stockholm, after another game of pool with the "Honky Tonk Boys". November 24, 2003. Photo: Björn Radon.

Christian K at the fleamarket in Skärholmen, late aug 2004, around the time for his guitar contributions to "Archie + Celia" & "Not Yours" and "Those Were The Days" vocal parts.

CG and DL at Studio Gröt early aug 2004, working on "I Did It For You", the self-mutilation sequel to the potato educational monster hit "Alströmer Disco".

DL recording piano overdubs at Studio Gröt, Ulvsby 11 Oct 2003, a great session that spiced up the new "No Camera" track and produced new versions of "Not Present", "She Was Not The One" and a complete reworking of "Why Keep Looking For Love (Where You Know You Can't Get It)". Photo by Gröt. (No, you can't see the parrots, but you can very well hear them!)

David at the Toy Museum in Stockholm, Aug 24, 2003. Photos by Fredrik Jonsson and/or Susanna Nilsson. (Hold the pointer over the picture to see another picture from the Toy Museum.)

Guitar guru Christian Kastén. Feel free to grab a silver pencil and draw an Ace Frehley make-up on your screen!

Christian K and David at David's place in Stockholm, early June 2003, recording basic guitar tracks for what became "All I Could Say At The Time", "Waking Up Next To You" and "Saffran Sunset". Yes, that's a signed Brian Wilson poster on the wall.

May 28 2003, comics exhibition & releaseparty at Konstakuten, Stockholm for David's latest comics book "Ritman Katz underbara värld" and the DL/CK-children's "pixi" book "Knisen & Knåkan har tårtkalas". David to the left, Christian to the right. Photo taken by Victoria Johansson.

David (right) and Christian (left) at Christian’s place in Lund, march/april 2002, recording basic guitar tracks that became the songs ”Red Eyes”,
”(Stuck In A) Weird Conversation”, “The Ilanda Barrows Five” and “Pawn Shop Bossa Blues”.

The classic photo from the 7'' EP back cover, here in full glowing color. It shows Christian laying down the guitar riff for ”Wonder Rock!”, autumn 2000 at Mejeriet, Lund. In this room, Endless Smile (and some heavy metal bands) use to rehearse and record. Photo: DL.

David beside legendary butcher’s shop Widerbergs in Lund. ”Here we chop the meat ourselves”! That’s ”Butcher Joe” in the background. Photo: CK. Note: printed in Bild & Bubbla 4/2000.

No, ”The Wonder Box” (12 cd) isn’t in the stores just yet. Skullfucking shit!!

The ”outsider genius” in his most beloved large old
flat in Lund, back in the days. Many ”lonely troubled
songs” were recorded here, and we know you know them
all by heart. Maybe you can see the bed lamp also?

This jolly good fellow with a gentle smile once claimed he wants to die on stage and be buried in his guitar case.

The Wonder Boys rock Denmark with a vengeance and the
press conference in Copenhagen was a huge success.

Christian K with his dear little friend, ”The Cnow”, The
Wonder Boys’ mascot who later inspired a children’s
book project, ”The Cnow & The Pignet” (Knisen &
Knåkan), which is currently being worked on by DL &
CK. Photo from autumn 1998, recording the guitar parts
for what became ”The Infatuation Highway”, some two
years later.

...and here is a 2004 photo of Christian K at David's place, this time with a little "pignet" fniend.

The poster-friendly DL photo by Anders Persson, from
the EP lyric sheet.
Note: this picture was originally printed in Samojeden
2 (autumn)/1997 in an article about junk markets and
morals.

DL early 2000, contemplating The Defeat Suite.

Bass player, demon producer, digital mastering
chief and web master – what more do you want from this
guy? Christian “Gröt” Gustavsson and his birdie friend, Kasper.

At legendary “Studio Gröt” 5 Oct 2002, recording the many overdubs to “Later Later Mr. Undertaker”, the most well-produced Wonder Boys track up to that date.

Lars at David’s place, 10 nov 2002, laying down the final overdub for the “T.A.S.C.A.M. Manifesto” album: the “red-eyed” harmonica ending of “Red Eyes”. Please note the Tascam 244 porta studio, mid-wife of all The Wonder Boys' early hits.

Try this pic with 3D-glasses on, if you like... This hideous face was snapped for posterity by Gröt during David's last "UH!!" of the Happy New Year EP version of "Bad Luck Charm". Studio Gröt, Dec 26, 2002. You bet the "UH!!" was inspired by Celtic Frost. Please note Gröt's old embroidered The Mission pillow in the background!!

Good ol' Gröt at home, recording/mixing the Liljemark epic "Crime Will Prevail", March 2003.

Markus Lantto has so far contributed to “II”, “T.A.S.C.A.M. Manifesto”, “Good Sides”, “Die Große Schlagerparade” & "Die Kleine Schlagerparade" and "Passion & Compassion", playing sitar, violin, talking drum, banjo, zither, guitar & mandoline.

Christian K and David at Christian's place in Lund, recording their bass parts for "On The Floor", 8-9 Dec 2003. That's an (unfinished) painting by CK in the background (right pic).

David in Studio Gröt, 27 Dec 2003, recording sax parts for "No More Encores" and "Talk Of The Town", plus editing together the aforementioned "On The Floor" and adding vocals to all of these. What a day(w)!
(Note the Barndth-'Olofs setlist from Café Cinema 19 Nov 1993 in the sax case!)

Honky Tonk Boy Lars Pettersson - step back for LAAARS!

Christian Hörgren & his free-jazzin' friends in the trio Apan (The Monkey) played a swell set at the releaseparty for David's "Ritman Katz & Mannen med Påskö-ansiktet" book at Café Edenborg, 14 Oct 2005.

David and Christian G in the Ulvsby woods outside Studio Gröt, Karlstad, February 28th, 2004. A new version of "It Takes Guts To Be Happy" was recorded that day (see Gröt's session shots below). Happy guts for everyone!

Rehearsing/recording with Endless Smile in 2000. Mattias Ullman, Stefan Åberg, David.

Early snapshot of David playing live with his great saxophone teacher Kjell Håkansson, in Skåreskolans matsal (where Skåreblåset used to rehearse), Karlstad, possibly 1985. Note: the song performed is definitely not "Sax Play" - David was too shy to ever play his sax masterpiece for his teacher. To hear the 2000 version of that number, check the mp3 section!

Speaking of "Sax Play", or "El Disgusto" as it was once called in the early '90s (and before that just "C#-D-H-G"), here's the earliest found attempt of writing down the basis of the melody. The use of the in-joke word "inödelt", would date it to ca 1987 (you comics readers out there all know that David's first comics fanzine from back then had the name "D.I.T., De Inödlas Tidning").

29 May 2004: While in Stockholm for the opening of her ”Remember Love” exhibition, Yoko Ono signed David’s copy of ”Some Time In New York City”, which was (to bring you the understatement of the year) much appreciated.

David after closing time at Café Edenborg, Gamla Stan, Stockholm, 16 April 2004, adding piano overdubs to “This Used To Be Our Bench” + improvising the instrumental “Café CM” track. Photo: Daniel Berg.

Now what’s this - live shots of The Wonder Boys?!? Or the Honky Tonk Boys (sans Björn Radon)? Not really, or sort of - just David and Lars making a rare (eh, rare in David’s case) karaoke appearance, singing the BTO classic “Takin’ Care Of Business” at Metropol, Sundbyberg, 21 April 2004. Aaawh! Believe it or not, they were asked to come back to the finals a few days later (and did so, too). Hwa hwa hwa. Photos by Barndth.

San Diego's finest: our favourite american, mr Tim Ellison (The Wonder Boys' biggest supporter, known from The Nephews, Modern Rock Magazine, Village Voice and Volcano Records Underground Mailorder), played guitar in The Bonniwell Music Machine (highly recommended!!) on some European tour dates 2004, and of course David had to go to London 15-17 November to hang out with Tim & the gang. (Carling Academy photo by Steve Worrall.) The trip also included a visit to Abbey Road Studios, + some "Muswell Hillbilly wannabe":ism on David's account.

The Wonder Boys didn’t play at Arvikafestivalen 2004, but David and Christian G were there. Too bad you can’t see Kraftwerk in the background (right picture), but you’d rather look at Gröt anyway, right?

David with Dee Snider at Hard Rock Café in Stockholm, June 5, 2012 (where Dee was signing his biography "Shut up and give me the mic"). To quote the great man himself and his Twisted Sister brothers: You Can't Stop Rock & Roll!

God bless the Wonder Girls! Above: Åsa Lundgren makes sure that “Something’s Happening To You” in Studio Gröt, 28 Dec 2004. Note: can you believe that this re-unites three ex-members of the 1991-92 turkey combo “Baren med vin & Josefin” (The Bar with wine & Josefine) to finally (!) make some pretty damn decent music?! Yes folks, miracles do happen!
Below: Eva Björkstrand in duet action at Studio Dayw, 28 Jan 2005, putting her magic on the CG/DL tracks “If We Get Through This, We’ll Get Through Everything” (which “certain key members” of this band [=David] think might be the best TWB song ever written, so far??) and “The Car Ran Out Of Gas (blues version)”. Note: yes, it’s a signed & framed Yoko Ono “Imagine Peace” poster on the wall.

David in Iceland, March 2005, as seen on the "Passion & Compassion" back cover (The front cover is from a postcard from Sicily). Photo by Åsa Grennvall. A minimalistic "Sgt. Pepper" vibe, no???

David with the great Randy Bachman in Gothenburg, Sept 29, 2005. Photo: Nicole Vickers. (Please note the TSOOL t-shirt!) And yes, Not Fragile was played as an encore!

The title pages of two books by Jonas Alströmer, from 1733 and 1727 respectively. The title of the book to the left can be heard in the "Alströmer Disco" song, listen closely at 03:16 - 03:43.

A tape DL got from Johan Wanloo many many years ago, which provived the title for the TWB album from 2005, and included (among other things) the "found tape" section used for "Oh Lord" (on Die Kleine Schlagerparade).

The Wonder Boys love you. Don't you ever forget that.
